  1. Semaj Larama

Scutosaurus is a Permian pareiasaur and was quite widespread ranging from Africa to Russia. S karpinskii lived between 260 and 252 million years ago. The name means “ Shield lizard “ and was named in 1922 by V. Amalitskii. Wild Past released a masterful rendition for their 2023 catalogue.

The sculpt ; The sculpting details are on another level, being longer, erect, and leaner with a longer neck and omitting the hunched back and downturned head of previous incarnations. The torso is wide, which tapers in at the hips and pelvis is well pronounced. The head is accurate being boxy, flat, with a squared muzzle, with cheek flanges wide and angled downward. . A double row of raised scutes run the length of the spine while wide squared scales adorn the belly. Osteoderms are even on the calves creating a flanged look. Here, the artist takes liberties while not proven scientifically are logical, plausible, and aesthetically appealing.

The paint ; A deep olive with a taupe make up the pallete with little variation. Yellow is utilized for the facial armor and some of the larger scutes. Black for the eyes and unguals complete the paint scheme. I cannot help to think a dark wash coupled with lighter hues would accentuate the masterful sculpting.

The pose ; An archosaurian – like high walk compliments the sculpt, with the right leg in particular featuring a bending foot while the right arm reaches forward. The slightest of curve to the spine captures the figure in a slow ponderous gait. A most impressive and welcomed departure, as opposed to the static poses of previous figures.

In 2020, a video posted by user Kayakasaurus featuring the sculpting process as a commission by the company Wild Past. The Scutosaurus is packaged with an additional Kotlassia figure and micro environment. Albeit a newcomer to the paleo market, unique and well made figures grace their catalog and offer a glimpse of what lies in wait for the future of Wild Past Studios.
